Yesterday Desktoplinux.com was contacted by a Dell spokesperson to announce
that Dell would soon offer Linux Desktops & Notebooks for the mainstream
population. This is apparently part of the new “You asked. We listened”
campaign. No distribution of Linux has been named yet for the Dell PCs, however
it assumed Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise will be one of the choices.

Dell adopted Linux for their servers long ago,
however the move to Linux in home computers has always been seen as an unlikely
one.

While there is a growing demand for Dell pre-built systems with Linux, the
majority of the population wouldn’t have a clue what Linux is, nor how to use it.

Although it is becoming more noob-friendly, most
power-users of Windows have trouble with Linux.

Linux offers better security, more customization & more powerful
debugging features.

Sounds good right? Well not really and I’ll explain why:

1) Linux isn’t designed for computer noobs - For
general use you will need to know at least some Linux commands,
however this can be quickly learned

2) Once you delete it, YOU DELETE IT! - Once you delete something on Linux,
there is no recovering it

3) Buggy - While Linux doesn’t have major bugs like Windows (Blue Screens,
etc.) it does have a heap of minor bugs and you should have basic knowledge of
how to troubleshoot Linux if you dont want to stuff
anything up.
